This is the final book of the Pentateuch written by Moses and it derives its English name from the Greek work deuteronomion, meaning the "second law", or the "law repeated".
Deuteronomy is essentially Moses’ farewell exhortation to a new generation of Israel who had come to maturity during the wilderness journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. He directs them to hear the law of God, to be instructed in the application of its principles in the new circumstances awaiting them as they enter the land, and to renew the covenant God had made with their fathers - a covenant that must be faithfully observed as the condition of God’s blessings upon them in the Promised Land.
